Dedicated to Finding and Documenting School Districts’ transfer Polices
School districts in California each have a policy about how how and when to grant a transfer request. This site is dedicated to finding out which transfers are granted and not using Public Records Act requests. That is, we will submit Public Records Act requests to school districts across California to find out what requests are successful and which are not.
What is a transfer request
A transfer request is a request made to transfer a student to another school other than which the student would otherwise go. For example, a transfer request can be Inter-district to go to another school in another district or Intra-district to transfer within a district. Both those types of requests are of interest to this site.
What is a Public Records Act request
The Public Records Act (California Government Code ยง 7920 et sec) says that most records (writings, decision, actions, financial records etc) are subject to public release. The law provides a 10 day window to respond to the request but often it takes long to get the actual records. This site submits Public Records Act requests to school district to get transfer information.
What to do with this information
The decision process of requesting a transfer from a school district is often opaque. This site’s goal is to shed some light on the process. Beyond that, this site has no particular goal other than offering some level of transparency.
